The Red Door

The Red Door

Somewhere inside me,
there is a
Red Door.
A Red Door that
opens both ways,
and only sometimes
sticks and groans
when it’s pushed.

On one side, most
of the Red is covered
in smudges and hand prints
and works of art
created in Green crayon.
Behind that side of the Door
I am messy and disorganized,
passionate and underestimated.
I am tangled between
a scream
and a dance.
But I am proud.

On the other side
of the Door, the Red
is clean. It is
quiet there–
I am quiet there.
Behind that side,
I am Clear, and
free to dance
without screaming.

It’s good there is no
lock on my
Red Door.
Too long on one
side, and I miss
the other.
